After that, the excellent International Christmas Fayre comes to Parliament Street in York (December 3rd- 17th), with tastes and traditions from around the world.

FILMS

The big blockbuster of the month is the 22nd James Bond thriller QUANTUM OF SOLACE (October 31st), which borrows a wordy title from an Ian Fleming short story but (as usual) little else. Here, Daniel Craig’s craggy, blue-collar Bond sets out to break the sinister criminal organisation behind the death of his Casino Royale girlfriend, Vesper.

EASY VIRTUE (November 7th), based on the Noel Coward play, and starring Jessica Biel, Kristin Scott Thomas and Colin Firth in a comedy about an American divorcee who meets her new – and very aristocratic – in-laws for the first time. The trailer looks light and fluffy.

W (November 7th) – Oliver Stone’s latest – is less light and fluffy: the title refers to George ‘Dubya’ Bush, who is now packing boxes and clearing his desk at the White House (don’t touch that red button, George: it’s not for calling room service). At the other end of the month,

HAMLET 2 (November 28th) is a madcap comedy with Steve Coogan as a teacher staging a politically incorrect sequel to the Shakespeare play.

Leeds Film Festival November 4th – 16th. 0113 2478398. www.leedsfilm.com At the time of writing, it’s too early to give you a heads-up of what’s appearing at Yorkshire’s premier film festival; but we do understand, horror fans, that Night of the Dead VIII will get an airing. John Foxx, from Ultravox, will be returning to the film festival for a third year with the UK premiere of a brand new show combining music and images. Log onto the website for full details.

DECEMBER

It’s a fair old month at the flicks: hard man Jason Statham is back for more violent hi-jinks in TRANSPORTER 3 (December 5th), while the kids should love MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA (December 5th) which features the vocal talents of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Sacha Baron Cohen and the late, lamented Bernie Mac (the last film he made before his death).

FAR NORTH (December 26th) was released in the USA ages ago and didn’t cause much of a splash but we’re pointing it out because it has a Yorkshire connection, well sort of: Sean Bean’s in it.

Then there’s AUSTRALIA (December 26th), an epic period tale set down under with Nicole Kidman and the man who should have been Bond, Hugh Jackman.

BEDTIME STORIES (December 26th) is a comedy with a cast and a half: Adam Sandler, Guy Pearce, Courtney Cox, Russell Brand and old Xena Warrior Princess herself, Lucy Lawless. The plot? Oh, something about a hotel handyman whose life changes when the bedtime stories he tells his niece and nephew start to magically come true.
